take it all out at in one piece by removing the steering box from the frame.
The shaft inside the column is part of the steering box and is not detachable. The column can be removed from the shaft, but you must pull the steering wheel and then slide the column off the shaft. to remove the entire assembly grncoup is correct: remove the pitman arm and unbolt the steering box from the frame. Unbolt the floor plate from around the column and pull it out into the cab. Hang on for a couple more days for a new tech article on steering options to be added here.
Welcome to the forum, There has been several guys on this forum in the past that have had that same problem. They wound up cutting the outer column at the floorboard and sliding it off the center shaft then later they welded it back together.

When you get a chance setup a gallery so we can see your truck. Keep asking the questions as there are many answers here (most of them good ones, lol).
