I need a pair of black sun visors for my truck. I don't care for the material they use on the aftermarket visors from ex. Mid fifties, etc. I was wondering if there are any other model vehicles that are similar to the original design, or a visor you found works in place of the originals. Maybe I could find a set on ebay?
I dont have any pictures but i did something like that to mine. they were out of a 79 thunderbird. orginally red but fabric painted black. i also used the orginal braket in the truck. the only other thing i had to do was brake the end off the inner top where it orginally would of had a braket to clip the end on to. but they do kind of look like the pictures.
Almost any sunvisors could be adapted, the design hasn't changed much thru the years or manufacturers. Some of the late model ones are pretty "nifty" with lighted mirrors etc included. Vinyl can be sucessfully painted or dyed, especially to black, using some of the products designed for that purpose.
You can modify the vixors to work if they use the same mounting holes. It just depends on how much time and effort you wanna take to make them work. I would suggest getting a template of the mounting position, and going to a parts store that may carry visors and getting a set there. Personally, i'm reusing the old ones and re upholstering them.
If ya have any interior questions, ask me.
I have no clue what they came out of. They were some other color originally and the PO dyed them black. As several others have stated just about any of them will work. Hit a junk yard with a cardboard template for the holes (unless you can drill new ones).
The newer styles have lights and mirrors. My explorer even has double ones. That would be cool in an old truck. My explorer rear view is auto dimmming and turns on the headlights. Hmm...ideas. LOL
I have the original hangers and they are mounted. I only need the visor itself. I did hit the junkyard and its not as easy at it seems. Some visors are too wide, too long, have different ways to mounting. I think the 90's style Mustang visor may work and it also has the lighted mirror (which my wife would love). I'll let you know what I come up with. Thanks for the suggestions.
What i would suggest doing is making of template of what you want it too look like, now if i was there, i'd make ya a custom set, but you can get originals from LMC Truck i believe. Let me know if ya wanna know how to make your own, but the way we make them requires sewing....rut ruh..if ya don't know how, im' good at it so i know how to do this type of stuff
Since you have the hangers already...you are half way there. I wish I knew what mine came out of. The PO told me he found them laying around his garage. He cleaned them up and dyed them. They are vinyl and in good shape, just not original. Unless someone looks really close, they would never know they were dyed. If he had not told me, I probably would not know.
I saw the original ones in some of my catalogs for about $15-20 each, but the newer styles look nicer. Your wife would like the lighted mirror too.
