thats not a wifes tale! it a cold hard fact. for every pump i changed in the dealership it was in a car that we told the owner not to do it on . they can it handle now and then but not every tank.
the pump is cooled and lubed by gasoline it needs gas around it to stay cool and pump.
I had heard that you shouldn't run one down past 1/4 of a tank, but on my Dakota I routinely ran it down to almost empty. Pump went out at 110,000 miles and cost me $230 to have replaced. They only replaced the pump though. In some cases they claim that it is almost the same price by the time they transfer parts from one to the other as to just buy the complete unit. My Caravan has 157,000 miles on it and still on the original fuel pump. The fuel gauge messed up about 5 years ago so the wife runs 200 miles and fills up. When the pump goes then I will get the full unit and get the gauge working again.
