Finally put the EFIs on

I put my EFI manifolds on this Monday and got it fired up today. I have the factory downpipe from the EFI manifold truck cut off right before the cats. It is a loud, tractor/dump truck soundin machine right now. I am now thinking about exhaust. The factory downpipe has 2 1-3/4" pipes, I am debating a Y pipe into 2-1/2" into a 40 series Flow that came off of my other truck. Does that sound like too much restriction because I read alot of guys running 3" pipe.

i would recomend using a V-Force muffler. They are cheaper than flowmasters, but sound better. They also have better flow, and more inlet/outlet options. You are best to go with a 2 1/4" - 2 1/2" pipe, anything more is pointless. My setup (on a '94 F-150)is factory manifolds with a V-Force dual in/dual out 2 1/4" connected to the manifolds where the first cat used to hook up, and then a 2 1/4" pipe all the way back, over the rear axle, and exiting behind the rear tires on either side. It sounds better than my buddy's '87 F-150 w/ a 302 and dual 40 series Flowmasters. With the 4.9 you dont want to run straight pipes or seperate mufflers because it will sound terrible. hope all goes well.

3" is too big for a 300, unless it's a built-up one. 2 1/2" is fine. some run true duals off of the 2 efi pipes. I use a thrush muffler which gives it a good throaty rumble, without being too loud to hear. I also use the walker downpipe which allows me to clear the crossmember without trying to squeeze evrything in above the crossmember, t-case, body, & frame. This is on '79

I just put the walker downpipe on, and 2.5" pipe back to my 2.24" flowmaster untill i get a 2.5" muffler and tailpipe set up.

The walker down pipe is somewhat of a POS. I believe the stock downpipe may flow better untill it hits the first cat. That is just my personal opinion when holding them side by side.

I would stick with 2.5" I think its the ideal size for this motor.

I had to do some die-grinding of the holes to get some better flow thru them. It's benefit allowed me to go without a cat.

I did too.

I had a hell of a time getting the pipe into the truck also. The manifolds were still connected, which didn't help. If i had a pump jack with me it would have made things a lot easier by lifting the motor slightly. come to think of it i had a bottle jack in the tool box the whole time. wow, i suck.

What i mean by it being a POS is the grinding required in the hole (i had to use a dremel as the die grinder wouldn't fit) and the pipe is sort of just shoved in and welded. Not mandrel bent at all, and crimped in a few places. Oh well, you can't have everything. If i were to do it again, i would have saved my money and got headers for an extra 100 bucks.

I had to do a little grinding as well, not too bad though. I'm just running the EFI's, walker downpipe to a summit cat and 2.5 to a summit el cheapo muffler. I think it sounds great, not too loud but with a ported head and an Isky cam you know it's there.

Thx guys. Only reason I am using the Flow is because it came off my other truck. Don't really have the funds to buy another muffler for a play truck right now, it is my work truck during the summer towing mowers. I'll go with the 2 1.75s into a y pipe to a 2.5 and it should be all good, It is all stock except for the EFIs, may have to upgrade for a 2 bbl later.

I'm using the EFIs on my '84 as well. I'm running duals till just under the cab & then 2 1/2" from there through a 3 chamber flowmaster (what the guy had on hand). Didn't use the Walker down pipe, the guy just made one of his own. Sounds a lot like a combination of a V10 & a diesel. The guy that did the work had never done an inline six & was really impressed at how the engine sounded.

Well, I have been cranking it up everyday, letting it run alittle, but I have a problem. I know your supposed to retorque the bolts after you warm it up once and I did that. But now every day I run it , the intake bolts on #5 and #6 back out some and have enough of a leak to kill it, and make it where it won't idle. I used anti-seeze on all the bolts, do I need to use loc-tite also? I can't figure out why the keep backing off.

I used studs and enough loc-tite to drown a rat, no problems here either.

I had a Walker downpipe on my 84 for a while, I too had to do some grinding on the rear inlet. Also the flanges didn't line up right at all, I had to cut and reweld one of the inlets so the flanges would seat properly. Then I warped the front manifold playing in the water puddles at Silver Lake. I hadn't realized it was warped until I kept blowing manifold gaskets. That was the third and last set of cast iron manifolds this truck will ever see! I picked up a set of Hedman Hedders from Jegs for $160. They were well worth the money and time spent installing them. I was thinking of running single 3" on this truck. You guys don't recommend this, why? Do you think I would be better with 2.5" instead?
