Hi guys.
I've got an 85 E-150, original owner and this punk *****ing van of mine keeps giving me totally B/S power and completely BS mileage. I'm talking like 6mpg. The van runs, starts and drives just fine, but the damn thing just guzzles gas like bottled water.
It had the CA smog packaged w/the air pump and AC and I figured that was probably creating some drag on the motor, so I removed those belts, but my mileage STILL SUCKS.
How can I achieve better MPG, and possibly better power?
I want this thing to turn at least 15mpg, is it possible to convert to ford EFI from a later year 4.9 I-6?
It is cold as hell here in Iowa, compared to where the van has resided for the past 20 years (formerly a california surfing van). I need it to come up with better mileage so that if and when I have to drive it back to SoCal, I won't have to spend a grand on fuel.
If I'm not mistaken, you can get an offenhauser intake or something and upgrade to 2 or 4bbl, but I am not sure if this will hurt mileage.
How have you upgraded from a 1-bbl, did you get any better mileage or not?
upgrading to a 4bbl carb and offy intake will help with mileage. I just uped my tire pressure to 5 psi below maximum pressure and checked my timing. Im getting alot better gas mileage. Try it out and see what happens.
I have a 86f-150 and I got the offy adapter not the whole intake and put a holley 500 two barrel on there. I been getting about 13mpg. I havent done the distibutor swap yet so I probably can pick up a little more with that.
The Offenhauser part # is 750-6019-DP from www.jegs.com and the Holley 390 cfm carburetor part # is 510-O-8007 239.99 for the intake and 296.99 for the carb. Other carbs can be used though. You can get these parts from many different places too. There are many helpful posts on this forum how to do the 4 bbl. swap also.
Wait, so I *don't* have to buy the whole goddamn intake and I can just get an adapter?
score.
So where do I get the adapter?
Yeh you can just buy this $70 adapter. It bolts right up to the existing stock intake. All you do then is put that and a carb on and you are ready to go. Check out that link to see that adapter. I put a 2 barrel Holley 500 on there and it runs like a damn top now.

Hope that helps.

where do I get a holley 500cfm 2bbl?
Jegs.com is set up so ackwardly, it's damn near impossible to find anything.
By the way, what distributor swap are you talking about?

I ordered mine thru summit racing. Just do a search for two barrel carbs. I had to rig up the gas cable put I have access to a machine shop and just wacked off the old ball one on the stock one and bolted it on the new carb.
