hello

hello, im not exactly new to the forum but i am new to this section of the forum. i own a 2001 ford ranger and am wanting to put some subs in it. the problem i have is that i have about 3 best friends and we hang out frequently. 2 of them received duis on new years and the other has a beater car that barely runs, so im usually the one stuck driving. plus im not ready to surrender my entire supercab for subs. one of my other buddies has 2 12s in his supercab and he can barely recline either seat back. i have been researching tonneau covers lately and ive decided to get either a fiberglass one or a aluminum slide back one, and i came up with the idea of putting subs into the bed. is this possible? i thought that i could maybe run the wires from the player/amp through the engine compartment and underneath the cab of the truck and drill a small hole in the backside of the bed and run the wires to the subs through that? is that possible? also, how many and what size would i need in the bed just to get the loud/deep bass sound i am seeking? thanks

yes you could, BUT.. i dont think you would get the full effect from them. in my opionion, you should get a box that goes into the seat hole on one side (im assuming this is an ex cab) and then you will be able to still seat 3 (hey, its not comfortable without subs, so no real change here :P )

Since you're wanting "loud/deep" bass and need to sit several people, I don't really have a solution for you. I don't think the bed idea is a good idea, you wouldn't have much of an effect from it like you would in the cab. You could do what Matt said and use up one of your seat spaces, but I think you'd only really be able to have one sub (I recommend a 12" of some sort for the most bass like you're wanting).

Did you mean solely mounting subs in your bed, or did you mean a blowthrough?

A blowthrough would work, but requires MASSIVE fabrication, including a large hole in your rear firewall and bed. A box is then constructed to fit against the front of the bed, and typically some form of RV waterproof piping is used to seal the hole.

I have seen a few at shows in S10's...unless you plan on putting in good time and doing it right, it's really best left to the pro custom guys.

I don't recommend a blow-through, way too much work and then you have to make sure it's all waterproofed and then if you take it out you have a hole in the bed and cab.

How about this, one of my friends did it with his S-10, I would assume you could do it just as easy with a Ranger.
Since he has an S-10 he has the fixed front console. We took some measurements and went straight back from that to the rear cupholder/plastic useless thing and built a box to fit. Now, granted, we did it during shop and had a CAD machine and lots of spare MDF layin' around, so our cuts were much more precise than either of us could have got just by doing it manually. Anyways, the box is solid on the outside, you can't see the sub, inside it's mounted on a peice of MDF that basically runs parallel for the most part below the top. The amp is under the front seat and all wires are hidden.

Four seats, loud bass, no space lost. Not comfortable for those in back, but all the seats work. Not to mention that box is bulletproof. We rounded all corners off, sealed it all with silicone except for the bottom, which is just screwed it so it can be removed if the sub bites the bullet or anything. Since it's CAD, no air leaks, no problems. I'll see if I can find the plans, but I'll bet they're gone since it was last year.
