Probably the biggest reason for the 7" of backspacing would be to get the portal box out of the way of debris and what not. Jusst remember that all IFS/IRS vehicles have a ot of backspacing anyway. If one was to use a set of dually hubs up front then you could use the wheels, then a set of spacers or something in the rear.

(where are some of pirates smilies when you need them)

Why don't you just get an H3. They say "hummer" all over them.

The only good thing on an H1 is the portal box on the hub. Other than that they are junk. I should know, 15 years as a maintenance NCO in the Army.

The biggest problem on the Hummers, until now, is the power. The 6.5 non-turbo'd engines were just dogs. I mean 60 MPH was all you got out of it.

The new up-armored ones.....those will scoot pretty good, but god forbid you get a 13000 lb truck stuck. Better have a few more to pull you out.

I "had" a fully-loaded civilian Hummer here for other missions. That had the 6.5 turbo and no armor and it would move pretty good. Don't think about towing a trailer with it. With 4K, even on a slight grade it would bog down to 35 MPH.

The traction control on them kinda sucks. You have to use a lot of brake action to get it work. But having 17 inches of ground clearance and a flat bottom helps in that department.

Overall, the nly really good points of a Hummer is high ground clearance compared to it's overall height and it has some pretty stout components. But, it's biggest drawback was always low power and non-locking diffs, except the center.

ok since we are on this subject why no splurge off. If you have 40k to 50k on a truck what would you do with it? No building a frame you find a truck and go from there.

> do they have so much back spacing

Generally speaking, having a tire stick out beyond the protective metal of the vehicle is not good. I "believe" the other thing is changing the tire in the field. It is a lot easier to slide a tire on a hub where the studs are right there instead of lifting the tire onto the hub and then trying to spin it around so the lugs line up six inches in. Then there is the design of leaving as much room for the hub/gear box itself and having the rim/tire come around it to protect it.

Someone that works on them can comment on that, I have never worked on a hummer, I just know other makes are designed like that.

Yea, I have been watching the E-Bay things on tires and rims. I have rims now, I am just trying to decide if these mil. tires

GoodYear / Wrangler R/T II Military OZ

are fairly worthless on a DD that only sees off-pavement a few times a week.

The RT-II tires are hard SOB's (is it the 36's or 37's?, the 37's are a better tire too), and thus aren't very great for offroad, but better then your at and MT style tires. But you should be able to get some good mileage out of them too.

The RT/II's are a 36x12.50x16.5 Bias tire, the Wrangler MT's are a 37x12.50x16.5 Radial.

The RT/II's are better in the mud, the MT's are better for the road work. Both have crap sidewalls. We shred them on the rocks here, like they are going out of style. I picked up a brand new set of 4 MT's for $200 at a DRMO auction. If you have a military base near you, check it out. The DRMO auctions are always getting rid of stuff.

We actually ordered Super Swamper SSR's and Wrangler MTR's for the trucks over here and, you're gonna laugh your ars off at this one, the idiots at the depot ordered a crap load of them. One problem.........They ordered 16" tires, not the 16.5's, so no go. They ended up selling all these 37" SSR's and MTR's for like $200 for a set of 4.

Guys were scooping them up and sending them home. It was cheaper to do this than it was to buy them in the states.

Yeah diddo on the sidewalls, the set of RTII's i have i noticed didn't take much to hurt the sidewall, pu a cut in one of the tires idleing through our junkpile when i got to close to some junk that wouldn't of hurt my boggers.

If you get RT II's i'd recomend getting the siped as they need all the help they can get in the slick stuff.

You ever see how much they charge for those friggin things at retail price? Good god, it's like $460 (EACH TIRE), just because it says military on them. And they pretty much suck!

Exactly! If you're looking for military parts, vehicles, other crap.....hit the DRMO auctions.
