I have a 95 explorer. the other day OD light started flashing.also noticed trans will not shift into 2nd unless I back off the gas. then it shifts right in.
Today I changed the fluid, filter and reset codes, however this did not fix problem and OD light came back on. Are the trans codes read from the same port as the engine codes, and if so can Autozone read these?
Could I still have contaminated fluid, beings I did not do a complete fluid flush?
Any help would be greatly apprieciated!! bean
I had the same intermittent problem with my 95 Exploere XLT. I had my codes read at an AMCO. They said I had a slip between 2nd and 3rd and it would cost $3,200 to rebuild the trans.
Before you do anything else, pull the negative terminal of the battery off for 10 seconds. The O/D light will not be on and the trans will work just like before. I did this and have not seen the O/D light since. When the computer detects even a momentary problem, it makes the trans run bad so you will take it in for service. Good in theory, but costly to a consumer if the problem is momentary.
If it comes back, then you have real problems. I have put 5500 miles on mine without it coming back.
Nothing better to do than to get the codes checked and get a few opinions from shop on this. Besides, AAMCO = All Automatics Must Come Out.
You've already gotten an established symptom, so maybe it's just a shift solenoid out of whack. That shouldn't be too costly a fix. When the trans runs bad, it's for a reason. This is not the old days where that light on the dash comes on to get you in to pay $500 to reset a light with a switch under the dash...
On OBD2, you haven't erased the code even by pulling the cables, as you found out. If the problem's there to be fixed, it's there, period, pal!
Since it's a '95 it should still be OBDI/EEC IV. My 95 has the OD light come on about once a year. I pull the codes and it doesn't reveal anything. Then I disconect the battery and it's good to go again. I'm sure eventually, the reset won't fix it, and then I will need to find someone that understands these transmissions without having to just replace the unit.
Had codes checked, found MEMORY CODE 646 (GEAR 2 RATIO FAULT) and KOER CODE 336 ( EGR PFE/DPFE VOLTS OUT OF RANGE HIGHER THAN EXPECTED).
I can not find any info about code 646 in my manual. Does anybody know what this code means or what "gear 2 ratio fault" implies? Thankz to all for info very much apprieciated!!! bean
