Installed MSD - timing question

We just finished installing the billet MSD distributor and MSD 6AL and coil. Runs a lot better across the board but especially at idle.

My question is: We have the initial advance set at 18 - we could have set it to 21. And the total advance at 3,000 is 38 (with the blue springs). I've heard both

1. Set the initial advance as far forward as you can.
2. Set the initial advance at about 15.

And

1. Set the total advance to about 35 to 38
2. Set the total advance to where it pings and then back it off.

I'm running Edelbrock Performer RPM heads and intake and a "truck" cam.

Well, you always try to put as much timing as possible without problems.
So, as long as you can get max timing(without det.), the initial is not a problem unless it's hard to start. 15 should not be bad, so I'd leave it alone if starter doesn't kick when motor is hot.

In my 428, I actually have only ONE spring in dizzy. This makes it bring in advance really quick, but starts easy. It will crank easy, but as soon as it fires it brings in about 24 degrees, then total is 38. This is not for the faint of heart or running cheap gas.

Works for me, but I'm known for not following the crowd

Both are correct..I run 18 initial and 38 total..works best with my combo...but every motor is a little different...18 seems to work really well for starts, hot or cold...but again thats my combo...38 should be close to tha max for any motor..any more and you will start to lose power at high rpm.Try the max and back it off if pingng is a problem...and dont run cheap gas....D44hd

We're definatley not pinging - but I don't feel like we have the power we should either yet. Problem is I have not idea what the truck should run like, so we're kind of the blind leading the blind.

Keep bumping up the total and see when the power drops off, or pings. Then, if it still starts easy, don't worry about the initial. If it starts hard, put more in dizzy so the initial is lower.

Maybe I should go to the electronic timing box and lock out the mechanical so I can play with it without having to swap out those teeny tiny little springs.
