I have an 01 Navigator with the alpine stereo system. One day my girl was driving the truck and the stereo died. I checked the #1 fuse and it was blown. Tried to replace it and it sparks and blows the second I put it in. I replaced the relay in the fuse panel and checked the fuses under the hood. I removed the stereo and the fuse still blows. I am sure I have a short somewhere, but have little experience in factory wiring. I purchased a chiltons manual, but I am not very confident in their wiring specs. They dont even show the fuses in the right place.
Can you guys help me in trouble shooting this kind of problem? Not sure where to start, but would like to do this myself if possible. Thanks in advance.
You will need to get wiring diagrams and a DVOM to trace down this problem. Try heading to the local library and checking if they have a subscription to the Alldata database. Alldata has excellent diagrams, TSBs, repair advice, etc.
my guess would be that the harness that is connected has maybe shorted against something. Maybe even the radio itself. You will have to pull the radio and see.
Thanks so far for the help. I purchased the vehicle off of a lease in '03 and as far as I can tell it was all stock prior to me purchasing it. There is nothing aftermarket in the truck yet. I am still waiting for navigation to flood the market and come down in price. Thanks for the alldata tip at the library. That never crossed my mind. If they dont have it are there any other suggestions for finding a quality wiring diagram at a reasonable price? The crappy chiltons I purchased covers my truck, f150 and expedition. I should have known better.
Also, I could use some helpful tips on what you guys do to track down these kind of problems. I really do appreciate the help. This is already far more than I have received in the navi/expi forum. Thanks again.
