I ve got a 92 f 250 7.3 idi 5 spd 4x4 that I am interested in turbo charging. I ve heard a lot of guys talk about how they have successfuly turboed their trucks and have great power gains, especially when towing. I think it is a great idea and I am considering it , but the only concern I have is wether or not I will eventually blow a head gasket or intake gasket with the increased cylinder pressures. I know these engines have like a 22 to 1 compression ratio already, and am worried that I will over do it and hurt the engine. The truck has 215,000 miles on it. I think maybe im just worrying too much and I just need to turbo it and forget it. Maybe someone can clear things up. Also, I dont know which would be the best turbo kit for this truck, Banks or Hypermax?
or a ats--get the turbo--but--get pyro.boost, and trans temp gauges in at the same time-------------once turbo in--can turn up the pump 2 flats--then turn up boost--but on that engine--id stop at about 10 lbs of boost--some say 12--but not being a fac turbo engine-----------make sure if you buy the ats--get the larger housing for a three inch downpipe with it--no exhaust restrction--wont believe the diff it will make---also--keep the pyro below 1200 deg--or pistons start melting---not a good scenario--
Good point. The guages are probably key to runnin these trucks properly. How long have you had a turbo on yours? Or is it factory? Did the factory idi turbos make as big a differnce as the aftermarket ones do.? I drove a guys 93 f 250 with a factory turbo pullin a cargo trailer once and it seemed to make a big difference over my truck.
Is there an advantage to a wastegated setup as opposed to non wastegated?
Get a wastegated ATS turbo.
It will run circles around the stock Ford turbo if you do the 3" exhaust with a see thru muffler or no muffler.
With the manual tranny you can skip the tranny temp gauge.
Do get a pyrometer and boost gauge though, install the pyrometer thermocouple in the stock exhaust manifold.
I am running ram air and an ATS turbo at 18 PSI on an 86 6.9 engine for boost.
3" exhaust, no muffler and dual 3" stacks, runs good.
What is the best way to buy one of those turbo kits, over the internet like on fleabay, or should I find a company rep somewhere here in ohio. Im not sure if finding a used setup would be the best idea, but I know it would be ALOT cheaper.
