I have a 98 explorer with the 4.0,and i believe i have the dreaded timing chain rattle!anyone have a ballpark price to get this taken care of,we have 102,000 miles on her but she has been pretty good to us for the 6 years we have had her...
I own a official Ford service manual for the 2000 Explorer and it has instructions on replacing the timing chain with the engine in the vehicle. Should be the same for your Explorer unless they changed drastically in one year.
when i am sitting in park or neutral,my wifes 98 sounds like a diesel.when you put it in drive it almost goes away, thats why i think the tensioner's are bad.the bad thing is i just had the timing chain cover and water pump replaced about 6 months ago,the labor alone was like $600.00
I got my explorer back yesterday, they pulled the engine and replaced the front and rear cassettes, it was all under warranty. The cost of repair was 1700.00
