Hello everyone, this is my first time with a question, so please bear with me if I don't do it right. I have an 08 f350 super duty 5.4l 3v. I have had a timing chain rattle on cold starts for about a year or so. Both vct solenoids were changed last year, and last week I decided to pull the timing cover to see where the rattle was. The right side chain had slack, while the left side was tight. I bought a new tensioner and the rattle went away for about 1 day, then it returned again(only a slight rattle now). There are no other issues with the engine, it runs like a champ. Any ideas as to why it still rattles on start ups would be grately appreciated. I just recently changed from fram oil filters to motorcraft. My boss also likes to add lucas oil treatment to everything, despite my pleas to adhere to Ford's recommended 5w20 instructions. Thank You in advance for any help. Steve
there is differences between the 2v and 3v for timing chain components.
to the OP....the 1st thing is to stick with MC oil filters or better.... Fram does not fall into the category of a better filter....the modular engines 2v or 3v tend to be more sensitive about oil pressure and flow... the 3v more so because of vct solenoids and other components.
does it sound like diesel? might be a phaser issue too
have you tried to look for a TSB on this? try this but it may not be associated with the 3/4- ton units ??

09-23-7 LOW FREQUENCY ENGINE KNOCKING NOISE AT HOT IDLE
I have a 2003 model with the 5.4 it runs good, has great oil pressure I need to change the oil and i will use a motocraft oil filter. I am thinking of using 5w30 instead of 20 from reading on here it seems to work better it only makes the noise for a second or to when I cold start it. I haven't heard it when its been warm. I don't want to harm the motor but can't afford to throw money at it.

being from Phoenix you prolly can get by with the 5w30....IF your not getting into the upper elevations where it can be cooler....but the 5w20 is what is recommended.
