I came across a 98 expedition - flawless, garage kept, xlt model, not a scratch or dent on it. Interior same as the exterior - flawless. Took it for a 50 mile test drive - perfect. New tires, shocks, brakes, new exhaust.
However, it has 204,000 miles on her. Engine so clean you could eat off it.
$5000.00 but my concern is the mileage --- comments???
I have 150,000 or so miles on mine 98 XLT and it doesn't drop a bit of oil. If they just put on tires, shocks, brakes and exhaust you are looking at $1000 right there alone. I would think 5k is worth it, just my 2 cents.
I'm going to drive it again weds. I'll pay attention to the cold start-up. I didn't know what to observed the first time because I'm a Jeep guy. I'll ask if any of the coil packs have been replaced, and look at the bottom of the doors for rust. Now you all have alerted me to the piston slap. I love the forums - you learn so much.
I do need to get back with guy. He says he's documented the entire history of this vehicle. I still can't believe how clean this expedition is.
ya my f-250 has a 5.4 with slight piston slap when its cold i drive 5 blocks and its gone. talked to a ford tech he said there is a tsb about it and it in no way is any signs of anything going bad. i have 130,000 on it.
my 98 expedition has 145k miles...it burns a quart of oil every 1500 miles.
the only things that have gone wrong with it are a blown sub (teenager), and turn signal stalk issue... i have replaced the front rotors once, shocks, idle air control valve (now clean it instead of replacing), and oil changes every 3k miles. antifreeze every 2 years. one front end alignment. the cd player jambed once...but my teeanger fixed it. I also change the tranny fluid and power steering fluid every 30k. I am on my third fuel filter as well. I do all the work myself (except alignment and rear shocks)
it is the only new vehicle i have ever purchased...guess i can't complain. i figure i will do one transmission rebuild and see how many miles i get out of the engine. i'll be happy with 225k.
I would just be concerned with a tight front end at that mileage...maybe some new sway bar bushings and shocks would be i order...
my stalk was fixed under warranty.... i don't think it would be difficult to do ...I have the paper manuals and should be able to look it up for you and report back...
i can't remember what the issue with it was..it was awhile back...
don't remember a re-call... we are under some sort of recall now...but I haven't had the time to go take it in...
I have two Expediton's. A 98 with 210,000 and a 01 with 198,000. Outside of tires shocks, and brakes, I replaced an alternator and #4 coil pack on the 98 and just plugs on the 01. $5k sounds like a good price to me.
