-Shift to Neutral, start the vehicle and select the desired gear.
Is he using a new key? It could be the anti- theft system kicking in.
I found the problem pretty quickly this morning. I had an idea it might be the brake light switch, or thought their might be a seperate switch for the interlock. As I removed two pin connector one of the wires popped off to the side! It had broken right at the crimp on the connector. As a note, I did check the brake lights, but they seemed to be working ok. The problem here was my 82 year old dad was watching the lights for me, and they were intermittent due to the broken wire! ( found this out later when he told me they had flickered but he thought I was just tapping the pedal.)
I simply resoldered the wire for a temporary fix. I broke the side out of the connector to get to the lug to solder the wire, so I went to a salvage yard and for a buck got another connect with about 3 inches of wire as pigtail which I will splice into the original harness.
Again, thanks for the quick responses. This is exactly why I stick around this board! I have offered my help a few times, but have received 100 fold help in return.
I did find the problem fairly fast this morning. Jared, you were close. I had checked the brake lights and "thought" they were working. I had my dad in back watching and he told me they were working. I did suspect something at this point as he seemed a little off as he reported yes/no as I pushed the pedal. As I was removing the wiring connector to the switch, one of the wires just popped to the side. I figured this was the problem, but went ahead and checked the switch anyway.
Apparently the wire that had broken was making intermittent contact and made it appear the lights were working. I had to break the side of the connector out so I could solder the wire back onto the lug. Works as advertised now. I consider this a temp fix and have made the trip to the salvage yard and bought a connector with about 4 inches of wire and will butt-splice it in soon.
Again, thanks for the help. Long Live FTE!!!!
I searched the recall area here on FTE, found only 2 recalls listed, neither related to this problem. I will however look into this further. I'm not too concerned since I have a "new" used connector to splice in, and I doubt it will give any more problems. I plan on stress relieving this part of the harness to minimize any movement of the wire near the connector. This should eliminate the broken wire. I suspect the break was caused by the wire flexing every time the brake pedal was used, probably breaking due to it being nicked when the insulation was stripped. The break occured right at the point of the crimp of the spade lug. My best guess of course......
