Timing
Ok
My truck is running great I have not heard a bit of ping (but I run the good stuff) and it starts with a flick of the key.
So I thought I would start logging all of my settings.
Timing according to my Snap-On light is about 20 degrees. Could this be correct or is my damper spun?

set it back to about 10, if it doesn't run right you may have a balancer that slipped..20 is way to much..be sure your rpm is down to 500-550 when you set it and the vacumm advance is disconnected..then check it at high rmp and vacuum connected..should be around 36 total

Ok idle may be around 600 but and yessssssssss the vacuum hose was off and blocked off at the time of the check. I am also running the vacuum advance on the port on the carb that does not have vacuum at idle.
I tried it at 10 - 12 and it ran like crap very rough.
So it sounds like the balancer has slipped.
So if I get number 1 to TDC it should also be TDC on balancer?

just pull the number 1 plug and rotate it to TDC using a dowl the check piston travel. 20 base timing is a bit much.

2 things:
First I just gotta agree with Jo about if it aint broke dont fix it...
Second, although I have taken many many Chevy and Pontiac engines apart to build, I have not done so with a Ford yet. So I dunno if this is silly question or not - are those dampers not keyed to the crank like in a Chevy? If so how can they spin? Learning all the time.....

It looks like the damper is just pressed over a rubber vibration damper, I don't know about a key.
You are right if it aint broke don't fix it. I wasn't fixing anything it is running great I was just writing everything down just in case I have to change something down the road.

the damper is keyed to the crank, but it is two pieces, the outer piece with the timing marks is seperated by the rubber ring, and when they get old, hard and cracked, the outer ring slips moving the timing marks from where they were originaly...an easy fix is to find TDC then add an aftermarket piece of timing tape to the dampner....
