Threatening e-mails (non-FTE)

I responded to a public post on craigslist about a week ago. The author posted this long sob story where everything bad that ever happened to him was someone else's fault. He was asking for an honest opinion, and I gave him mine.

Apparently, he didn't like it very much. He has now sent me three e-mails, and hs made several threats about killing himself and taking me with him if he can find me.

This has turned very serious indeed.

My question is what should I do? Do I call the police? He obviously has emotional problems - do I just hand it over to them and let them deal with him?

Calling the police and letting the detectives see your computer files wouldn't be a bad idea, the person is commiting a crime by threatening you. Of course, you would have to meet the person face to face in court....
I wonder if anyone else that responded to the thread is being threatened???
Is there anyway for you to privately contact other people that responded to this wacko's thread?

Blocking his emails would be good, but he may be serious about doing you or himself harm. Notify your local law enforcement. Then when they tell you 'We're sorry sir, but a crime hasn't been committed yet," you'll feel justified in buying something for your own protection and wasting him if/when he shows up.

block his emails. one problem with contacting you local law enforcement is that when they find this guy, your name gets revealed to him, and then he can find you.

Forward a copy of the emails to the FBI, local law enforcement, and to the Homeland Protection Agency.

DO NOT BLOCK THE EMAILS!

Save them to an evidence file.

If possible, print every single one of them out, and make backup copies on a CDR (NOT CDR/W).

Document every single move.

DO NOT keep the printouts, or file copy discs in your own home - get them out to a safe location. This is backup - if anything happens, you want evidence out there.

Report it. It IS serious.

YOU CANNOT AFFORD TO TREAT IT AS ANYTHING LESS THAN LIFE THREATENING.

Act on it at once, do not wait.

Consider this: HUNDREDS of people thought CHARLES MANSON was a goof. DIDN'T THEY?

It looks to me like you are in danger. The perp may be able to hack an address off of the web. It would be best to find out who and where the threat is, but the FBI has the means to do that.

Look at your habits too - don't drive the same route to work or school everyday. VARY it, be unpredictable.

The majority of stalkers rely on set habit patterns to set up their prey.

Don't be prey....

Be the hunter!

THINK like a hunter.

If you know any of your neighbors, inform them that a threat has been made on your life, and ask if anything suspiscious has been seen.

Determine if any of them are military, or prior military. Share phone numbers with them. GET A PHONE LIST RUNNING!

Get a neighborhood watch set up.

You can't count on just moving. And why the hell would you? The perp will come to you. SET UP FOR IT.

This could get serious. Report him to the IRS and his ex-wife, then block his emails.

On second thought that's kind of harsh. Tell him you're really a 13 year old girl and your Dad and the police would like his phone number.
