Wow this is scary, don't let threats go unreported then we read about your death in the papers, sorry sounded harsh. Turn that sucker in, maybe he can be saved before he goes postal. Now i'm scared and will communicate with FTE members nicely in the future.

Yes, it was the SF craigslist section. Rants & raves, actually.
I use yahoo as my e-mail provider, so my IP address is NOT in the header of an e-mail. The only IP addresses in the header of any e-mail are any relays along the path that the e-mail hit. Since I'm using a web browser and not an SMTP client to send mail, I'm very much hidden. He would have to get a court order to get Yahoo to release my IP information. And then another one for my DSL provider to get my address. I do this kind of work for a living, and I'm VERY familiar with what can be traced and what cannot.
So I'm not worried about it from that perspective.
I'm just a little freaked out because someone with obvious severe emotional problems has threatened to "take himself out and me with him" if "he ever finds me."
Right now, the plan is contact the sheriff's dept. tomorrow morning and ask them what they can do about it. In this day and age, they'll likely fill out a report and that will be the end of it. I'm not considering blocking the e-mails or ignoring them and hope he goes away.
Thanks for the snippet of California penal code. VERY helpful info to have.
I used the geolocator tool. It put me about 30 miles from where I live. Probably my ISP's gateway to the Internet.
33 replies... thanks for the support guys! I'll let you know if anything interesting happens.
true, the ip address is in the header, but that site looks like it only gives out a town
I just looked at IP addys found in three different emails and different ISP's for Spokane, WA. In all cases, the lat/long are the same. Hence, it appears that all that can be identified using the earlier noted website is the city. The lat/long determined via the IP addys are not in agreement with the actual lat/lon of the homes the emails came from.

I don't know what a 'Craigslist' is, but that person, might be serious. I would not take it as an idle threat, and I would be prepared, just in case. There are just soo many unstable people out there, you just never know.
I do like that idea about posing as a 13yr old girl and your dad wanting that persons contact information. That sounds very plausable.
I would be tempted to call him out and tell him to meet you in a big open public area on a certain date at a certain time. Ask him what he looks like or what he will be driving. You could tell him what you look like and what you'll be wearing.(But not the real info.) Then stake the place out for an hour or so and if he comes takes some inconspicous digi shots of him, his car, and his license plate. Don't reveal yourself or confront him. If you think he might be "packing heat" call the cops with an anonymous message that some weirdo in such and such car that looks like such and such might be carrying a gun.
no, dont create a situation you or someone else will have to diffuse. If you have a reputable ISP, they WILL tell you where that ISP is originating from and they can contact HIS ISP and then authorities can go from there....
AndyM: Just to be safe, Google sites on being stalked. There's some good info on how to collect evidence in case things really get bad so you don't have to start from scratch with the police when the heat is already on. Greywolf was right on about what to do for a while, even if it may sound extreme.

Cigarxtc:
Craigslist started out as an online garage sale by a guy named Craig (Duh) and has grown into an international phenomenon, where you can buy, trade, sell, talk, rant n' rave just about anything. The "Best of Craigslist" link is pretty funny IMO.
Though the SF one is the original and probably the biggest, there are many others, perhaps a link to one geographically near you...links are on the home page www.craigslist.org .
There are some real idiots out there in the online world, and many flock to CL. But it's been a very useful site as well. It probably represents all that's good and bad about being online.
I sent him an e-mail earlier today advising him that he's already committed a misdemeanor, and that any further contact from him would result in a phone call to the police.
Well, he did, and so did I. I'll let them deal with him now.
