I have my F250 offroad a few times a week. No extra equipment except 33" BFG ATs and a stock skidplate for the tranny I added after I bought it. I don't have the FX4 stuff but it did come with the steering stabilizer.
I don't do any Hard-core offroading but mostly just work-related stuff on my property. Hauling wood, tools etc. In my opinion, the V10 is a great offroad motor-nice low rpm torque and low weight. I had a Chevy 1500 Z71 that got bottomed out in places my F250 cruises over without a bit of trouble. I wouldn't say these trucks were built for offroading but they definitely hold their own. The high chassis/frame clearance and solid front axle combined with the low speed torque of a V10 or PSD is a nice combination for hauling and towing offroad.
Ive had mine in places where a superduty should not be, and I always regret it, every huntin season I tell myself, "not this year, not gonna do it" but I always end up on a 4-wheeler road finding the next hikin spot
And I spend the three months after huntin season buffing out scratches, replacing lenses, bumpers etc...............I think I was meant to own a beater but ya know how that goes. You would be suprised just how well a crew cab PSD can 4-wheel, its impressive.
I thought I'd take My new truck (2002 F350 v10) out and see how she did off road, I have a jeep as a play toy, I don't mind any dents or scratches or broken windows on it! I wasn't planning on actually doing anything more than going out and finding a little bit of snow in the back country until there was a wash out on one of the logging roads. I was about to park it and tag along with my buddy but i thought "What the hell doesn't look THAT bad" Well I knew i was getting into trouble when i had one of the back tires in the air and the truck was rocking pretty good, the trucks articulation isen't one of it's better points! LOL!!! I was almost crying when i thought that i had slipped the front end into a huge stump. I don't want any dents on my baby!!! lucky for me things wern't nearly as bad as it seemed i backed up a bit and drove right threw, I posted a couple pic in my gallery. I would have to agree that the truck is VERY capable, but the hell if i'm gonna scratch or dent it to see just how capable!!!
mine has been on the beach for surf casting many times, but mostly towing and because of where i live. the 4x4 has saved me many times on slick salt water launch ramps where 4x2's where getting stuck, i live in a lake area where our roads are not so great in the winter time snow wise.so you need 4x4 to get in and out.
the truck is just awsome with what it can do.
