1997 Transfer case noise
I have a 1997 Explorer with a 4.0 SOHC and a 5 speed auto 4x4 trans and traction control. I did have an issue with the 4x4 lights flashing, but fixed that problem, but I still have a scary issue. The truck drives fine, but some times wile costing or the load is off the drive line, I get a werling / grinding from the transfer case. The noise will stop if I hit the gas thus loading the driveline. It will be fine for a while, but will soon return. I did rebuild the transfer case and installed a new sliding gear, new plastic guides, new shift motor and new hall sensors. I did not replace the electric clutch. I am not sure how it works and did not see a problem.
