gauge selection-boost

Hey guys. I need some help on picking a boost gauge. I am trying to go cheap by buying my gauges and pillar in differant places. My question is, do I want a mechanical or electronic boost gauge? Does the gauge need a sending unit, because that is what comes with the electronic gauge? THANKS!

you want mechanical. also you want one that only shows boost (no vaccuum) and one that goes to at least 30 psi

i thought all boost gauges are mechanically driven, electrically lighted?

you want one that has at least 30 psi, mine is 0-35psi, no vacuum. the "sending unit" is usually a "T" in the MAP line, with a small plastic hose that runs from the back of the guage into the tap in the line. some do the conventional drill/tap into the manifold, and some do the easy way, the AIH delete/boost fitting.

i diddnt know there were and electircal boost guages either. maybe on the bd xmonitor or edge juice with attitude they just splice into the map sensor line?
it is easy to tee into your map line just make sure you dont kink the small plastic tube that connects to your guage and have to pull everything apart like i did

I believe some companies make an electronic boost guage. They have a sending unit of sorts that you would run a wire to your guage rather than a hose.

Back to the question. I'd go with a mechanical guage. I believe them to be more accurate and a little more responsive. I mechanical guage does not need and will not come with a sending unit. Like stroker said, you can tap into the MAP line or the method I prefer to delete the AIH and use the plug that has a fitting for a boost line. No vaccum on your guage either.

You might also want to find a guage that will go over 30lbs, say 35lbs. Autometer guages go to 35lbs. I just installed some new Autometer guages tonight (no pics yet, it's too dark--I literally just finished) and when I took it out for the test drive, I saw 32lbs of boos a couple of times. Doesn't happen often, but it's nice to know what you're running and a 30lb guage would have just pegged out on me.

My post turbo EGT's rarely get to or over 1000*. I've never seen 1100 post turbo. They usually will run up pretty close to 1000, but usually stay under it, probably somewhere in the upper 900's.

Red face

I have both the manual and the digital boost guage. The manual will read from the line the electronic will read from the map sensor. Both will read the same because I dont know about these upgrades to get more than 22lb myself with or without a sled. I get mine up to 1056 max pulling a 32 ft travel trailer really light up 8 percent at speeds of 64 slowest.

My 6-Gun tuner get the boost readings from the MAP sensor too, but with the regulator on the MAP sensor line, I never saw more than 22 lbs of boost, even though I knew I was running more. That's the reason I installed the mechanical Autometer guage.
