Great site!! New poster here. Looking for info.
I have 98 f150 4.6,163k,burning a/f on start up only. Misses for a minute or two then clears up. Not adding alot of a/f to coolant jug but some. Been a mechanic all my life [47yrold] but i've never been into a triton motor before. Thats one of the reasons for buying it. Do these engines have intake/gasket problems as I have seen with the competion.
Pull the plugs, and see if you have coolant (or just plain messy plugs) in #1 and/or #5.
That would be the coolant crossover on the intake leaking into the intake ports.
Maybe you have a heater hose leaking right onto one of the plug holes, that's usually #4... check all the plugs anyway, just in case it's not something major
You might want to get the misfire counters read. That'll help narrow down the problem, at least.
So is it safe to assume if its intake problem #1 & #5 would be getting a/f ? If so I can pull those two and presurize system to see if a/f is there.
I have scan tool at work, it doesn't miss long enough to set a code, but it does set a code. Can't remember # right off hand but it says gross vacum leak detected. Sometimes I reset it sometimes it clears it self.
I know its not heater hose problem its inside not outside....steams out the exhaust and the sweet smell for about 2 mins. upon start up after sitting overnight or after work.
At my day job I"m a tech. So you know how I feel about working on my own stuff ?
