hey there guys, i just got into the 4x4 life and im alittle confused! i know that the larger the tires the lower the gears u have to get. what would happen if someone has 33" tires and really low gears <say the gears needed for 44" tires>?? what would this do, what does it effect? what happens if its the reverse of my first question, 44" tires and high gears?
one day as i was looking up info on old military trucks through the internet i saw some jeep trucks had only about 33" tires yet gearing of like 6.##:1. considering it has fairly small tires and low gearing does this make it more versatile through mud and hard terrain???
help the new guy out...how does it all work?
gabe
smaller tires like 33's and say very low gear like 5.13's would give you tons of pulling power and off the line power, but running 55, the motor wouldbe screaming for mercy, on the opposite end, running 44's with say 3.54 gears, it would be a struggle to get started off the line, and going down the highway at 55, 3rd gear could probably not be used on hills and such, generally you want you overall gear ratio to come out from around 3.00 to 3.55, for example, im running 37 inch tires w/ 4.10's and the truck was orinally equiped with 3.54's and 29 inch tires, now with the 37's and 4.10's im running the equivelant of having 29 inch tires and 3.22 gears
hope i didnt confuse you
