I am in the process of doing a solid axle swap. The axle (1978) i have has discusting rotor shrouds. They are rusted to hell and the ones of my old axle (1996) wont fit. How important in this part, can i drive without em? I know if i buy some from a junk yard theyll prob be just as nasty.
Probably. Rear disk swaps don't come with shrouds. I'm sure you could run without them, but you will lose out on any protection they offer. . .minimizing splash from puddles, mud, etc. Um, they mount behind the spindle or caliper bracket too, right? I wonder if you would have to shim them out or if its not that critical spacing wise
*Supposedly* the shrouds are supposed to direct air over the rotor to keep them cooler. For all the headache they caused trapping gravel and bending and rubbing against the rotor I say toss 'em.
I haven't noticed a loss in braking ability since ditching them, but have noticed that I'm not pulling the wheel off everytime I wheel trying to dig a pin head sized rock out from behind it.
