Fuel guage

My fuel guage doesnt work and I check out the sending unit when I had the tank off yesterday. There are two wires into the sending unit. A green and a black. The green one had a connection running up the frame, but the black was cut and had no other wires around it. Does anyone know where the black connects to?
BTW its a 77 F150 4X4 (behind axle tank)

The black wire is a ground wire.
