After cranking the truck, the ammeter pegs hard to "C" for a long time. After about 5 miles it comes back to center. I haven't had any problems starting. Does this mean that the alternator is getting weak and not sufficiently charging, or that the battery is becoming hard to charge? Or something else entirely? Voltage regulator?
How old is the battery and alternator? I would get both of them checked out, just to be sure. I had a bad voltage regulator that when you revved up the engine, the ammeter would go further twards the "C" on the gauge.
That's what mine is doing. at higher RMS it pegs all the way to C. at idle it's just a bit towards it. The battery is about 3 yrs old, caterpillar 1000CCA and the alternator... hmm maybe 30. No friggin idea, only the P/O knows I'll pull them tomorrow and have autozone test them. They love it when I'm pulling parts in their parking lot
put a volt meter on it, you'll probably find it is charging way to high, before you replace anything, check the grounds, the regulator needs a good ground to function properly and it rely's on asheet metal screw in the fender well. Could be a bad connection there.
