7.3L Longevity

I'm looking at a '92 F-250 which has the 7.3L diesel engine in it. This engine has close to 300,000 miles on it. The current owner swears the engine still runs real strong, and though I have no reason to doubt him, I'm suspicious about the longevity of these engines. Isn't 300,000 miles about the upper limit of the lifespan on these engines (give or take a few thousand)? Thanks for your opinions.

400K is the average and from what I'm hearing 500K isn't that unusual.
My 6.9 had 300k when I sold it, ran like a new one. I have no doubt it would have lasted me quite a while longer.

The service schedule that was performed on the engine is the determining factor.

Good products at regular scheduled time means lots of miles.
Cheap stuff at three or four time the recommended amount of miles on changes means an early grave at 300,000 or so.

I managed to kill my original 6.9 in 300,000 even with good care, but I have recently won the distinction of owning the most abused truck on the planet.

If you are going to do something, do it good and better than everyone else.
