hey all...i have a 93 f350...7.3....i bought it about 40,000 miles ago and it always had a real quiet ticking sound...like a vavle tap....but has always ran great.
i was sitting a a light the other day and outta nowhere came a knocking sound. i crossed the light and it got louder...and about 5 seconds later it started knocking so loud...sounds like a locomotive..thats how loud it was...then it lost alot of power and runs real loud and rough...likes its running on only a few cylinders.
people told me its a rod...but i didnt think a beat rod would cause loss of power..and run real shakey.
does it sound like its a wasted motor...or something like a bad cylinder or something worth putting money into??? any tests i can do to rule out different things?? any info would be greatly appreciated.
i was told a new motor and instal is around 6,630 damn!!!!!
thanks..Mike in NJ
i'd check injectors , timing see if the pump might of come loose and out of time, and do a compression test and determine whether theknock is from the lower end of the motor or not. check the fuelsystem for crud. stuff like that.
it'd be cheaper than the new motor. might just need a fuel system, ie IP, Injectors, and return line kit.

With the engine running loosen each injector line one at a time. If the noise quites that injector is bad. If it does not quit retighten and go to the next one.
Also make sure it's full of oil. These trucks use some oil, they need to in order to lubricate properly. I assume you checked that already, but just in case. It will make quite a racket when it gets low.
if one of the injectors has puked, like dave stated, it will make a helluva racket and miss too. If that doesnt show anything ... Could then remove the valve covers and see if one of the valve stems is missing or a broken rocker arm.
