Steering columns

I did a search and came up with different opinions on what steering columns will work on 73-79 ford trucks. I've got a 76 F250 4x4 with auto trans that the column needs replaced. I dont need a tilt, but will any F150-F350/ bronco work as long as its an auto column? Whats the difference between 2 wd and 4wd can they interchange? Thanks
David

they will work if its a 4x4 colum or you will need to change the center shaftt make a 2wd work.

From my experience (I just did a auto to manual swap) the 2wd and 4wd columns will not interchange. The 4wd has a shaft coming out with 2 sets of splines on it that the steering shaft couples to. The 2wd has a piece pressed or welded onto the end of the shaft to attach to the ragjoint piece (not sure on the terminology).

That piece is just a coupler.

It should come off after the bolt is loosened.

It takes a 12mm (7/16") 12 point socket to remove it.
