Heavy-duty purchase...

I am looking to buy a 2006 Diesel 250 CC 4x4 and I have never owned a large truck before... I have driven them and know that they are a different animal. However, I am disturbed by what I read here about Ford's 6.0 diesel... (not intended for the diesel forum... a purchase question)... so, would you buy a new 250 or wait for the 6.4L to be issued? (time is not an issue)...

Thanks...

If time isn't an issue, I'd wait. if you have to wait 12 months, that's a full year you aren't paying insurance and maintenance on a vehicle, as well as anouther year to save up towards it. Don't buy anything until you need it.

Of course, you may want to consider that some people don't like buying vehicles in their first year. Does that go for engines as well?

I agree... but I have purchased 2 vehicles in their "premier" year and have had relatively good luck. I would think that the chassis, body, etc would be the same but with "just" a new powertrain... but your point is well taken, though.

Talking New 6.0l

You should not let all the bad post about the 6.0l make you afraid to buy! Most of these are from people that have some real problem with thier trucks, some are just TROLLS bashing the name and engines, others will not be happy no matter what a dealer can do for them! But remember those of use that are trouble free, have no reason to complain on this site! Therefore you only hear the negitive about them. I personaly have had no problems with my truck, & am very pleased with it in all aspects. I just don't go starting threads about how great my truck is (most of us, already know this). Anyways I would buy another one in a second ( If my wife would say yes) and feel comfortable about my purchase! Then again I would like to have the new PSD also. Hope this helps you! I just think people read to much negitive and not enough good about these trucks.

I have a 06 Diesel.

I am 100% pleased with it so far (7000 miles)

It is MUCH different than driving an F-150 I didn't think it would be much harder to park/maneuver. BUT It is significantly harder to maneuver with its extra size, and not as sharp turn radius.

I have a crew cab and the length is so much longer than my f-150 was.

Of course the size is what I like!! but...

I always felt like buying the new model year would be risky. Rather let them work out design issues etc. But I don't have any factual data to support that buying a truck that has been out several years is better or not.

Lastly...

REMEMBER there are 2 kinds of people that come to this truck forum. Those that have had problems with their trucks who come here for answers (or to bitch) and those that are interested in 'mod'ing the heck out of their truck with bigger tires, chips, tuners, lifts, etc etc. and come here for information.

The average truck owner is probably on the road enjoying hundreds of thousands of trouble-free miles on their truck and wouldn't think to waste their time going on-line to tell how much they love their truck.

YardApe -- That is a hard question to answer. Usually the last generation of a product is the best so far. With that being said, the 2006 6.0L should be the most reliable yet...since being introduced in 2003. The only issue I have with the 6.0L is the EGR valve becoming dirty often. I have several friends/relatives who own 6.0L's...and that is the main complaint. Just requires more maintenance than they are used to.

IMHO...I would probably NOT purchase the new 6.4L in its first year, but wait a year or two. However, I think I remember reading that the 6.4L will have multipule EGR valves to help with the extra maintenance that only a single provides.

Good luck with your decision!

Thumbs up

I got my 2006 F250 CC FX4 6.0l the day after Thanksgiving. I LOVE IT!!! I have 3000 miles (roughly 1000 towing) on her thus far and I have NOT one complaint. I'm gettin about 16mpg atm and have no mods. I am looking forward to putting about 300000 miles on this baby. Not only do I like the performance but I love the body style as well. I don't see how Ford can improve on the body in 2007. Go test drive one - hell go test drive several - if you like it and the price is right, grab her. I doubt you will regret it. Happy Hunting and GL to you.

Regardless of the rosy glasses and happy stories, the 6.0 has NOT been a good release for Ford. There have been an inordinate amount of problems and buybacks. Every year released since '03 has been a little better, but for 40-50G's, there shouldn't have been a "preseason" for owners until Ford can almost get it right. There is way too much at stake in the truck market to absolutely blow a motor release like they did.

The new one "may" be better. I certainly wouldn't want to buy the first year model though, just as in 2003. Let others be the guinneau pig. Money doesn't grow on trucks or trees

well, i don't have a 2006, but i can say that my 2004 f250 6.0 has over 27,000 miles on it and love this truck! the only reason i am even considering buying the new 6.4 is because we will need a second truck in the future (my truck for work and home), and might as well make the excuse to wait and get the new one, good luck with whatever decision you make!

Yardape,

You are getting some great comments here. Best I can offer is to suggest asking people about their trucks when you see them at the store or at the gas/fuel station. This is what I did and I did no get one single complaint about the 6.0Liter diesel. The only real complaining I've seen is on here.

The issue at hand isn't wether the 6.0 was a good release for Ford.

The issue is wether a NEW 06 6.0 would be a good choice for a potential buyer right now.
