Probably an NP208.....

on edit, T.R.Bauer, ......you're right...didn't mean to make it sound like the only choice....I often just see the np208s at the wreckers....

It will be either a New Process 208 or a Borg Warner 1345. You'll have to climb under and read the label on it's rear side.
Yes, Ford put both of these in F150's and Broncos.
No, you can not "twin stick" either one.

while climbing around (yeah, yeah, yeah, I'm short) under my truck, I found a vacuum hose hanging from the top of my transfer case. I think it's a Borg-Warner. Does anybody know where this connects?

My 84 F150 has an NP208, I don't think Ford started using the BW1345s until the later 80s early 90s. I have seen them in F250s before. It's been a good one so far and I have 206k on it (the only drivetrain component I have yet to rebuild) No it's not the toughest xcase, I think you'll find it can hold it's own. A buddy of mine has one in an 88 Dodge Ramcharger, he is soo mean to that damn thing! He drives around with the hubs unlocked in low range/1st gear hammering the ***** out of that truck! He'll manually shift his auto 1st, 2nd, 3rd gear in low range then at about 35mph slam it from low range into high! I can't believe how much torture he has put that 208 through and not broke it yet! Oh BTW that hose you found is the vent tube!

Okay PK. Thanks for the reply. vacuum hose was dried out and just hanging on the side of the case by thin air so I couldn't see where it went to. It doesn't have to be plugged into anything then?

on a 1981 F250 c6/BW1345. The hose is an overflow-expansion vent goes up from pipe nipple and loops on clip on case gear shift lever and then hangs down. Just open on end.

Just a note about T-cases: Every single one of them that I have every has lasted longer than anything else in the entire truck. The best example is the one that is in my toyota. I needed a new t-case because I put a 350 chevy in it and the t-case I had had the wrong shaft. So, I went to wrecking yard and they said "we don't have one". Well as it turned out they had one in some weeds that they had forgotten about and they didn't know what it went to. It had the shifter cover off of it and it was full of water, duckweed, algae, and a good deal of rust. It would still turn with significant effort but to my surprise it was faily smooth still so I offered them 25 bucks for it, drained the water, and prayed for the best. I have done nothing to it to this date except regularly change the oil and it has been in my truck for 14 years without a single problem. Even then, it is not the best t-case I have ever had. The best one is my np 203 in my 78 f250.

I've seen both transfer cases in the trucks, I have to agree that they will last forever, though the case itself is the weak link. I spent forever trying to find an NP to put back in, all anyone had was BW. I split the aluminum case on the NP, when you check on the case at a junkyard, clean it well, as the cracks can go from small to huge in a hurry.

My 84 has a NP208 in it, and to be honest I don't like it. The case is a bad cast, with air holes in it or something. Oil has leaked throught the case for years, I have to constantly keep check on it. In fact it has been rebuilt twice for loosing to much oil and burning up. I would like be able to swap it for something with a metal case.
