I have the dreaded oil leak problem. collects on the bell housing but looks as if its dripping down off the starter. brand new 2005 f250 king ranch with only 3000 miles. I have been happy so far with this truck but this problem has me worried. I have read a lot of the posts on oil leaks and have seen several posts about leaks traveling down the starter and collecting on bell housing but no follow up posts stating where the leaks were finally found to be originating from. Any ideas? I hate to let some clueless dealership tear my truck apart trying to find this leak if some of you guys have already been down this road and found the answer. Any help would be appreciated.
I had 2 locations that caused that oil leak problem. 1st 2 were the glow plug wiring harness on the right side. 2nd was the bed plate leaking. It started right in front of the starter. Now every thing is all sealed and dry.
I also had the bell housing leak.. Mine was the rear main seal.. Replaced, the leak came back, but it wasn't the new seal, ended up being left over oil that the dealer did not clean.
has 100,000 warranty on engine.....forget about the leak, check it at 90,000, if its gone, great, if its there, fix it. I have a front main leak...i cannot stomach having the dealer tear her apart for that leak...its got less than 10,000 miles. Im hoping it will go away. Between oil changes it does.
I also had the bell housing leak at 12,000 miles! I wainted till 20,000 to take it in after reading about the rear main seal. Turned out to be a glow plug o-ring on pasenger side. They replaced it under warranty, I was not happy because after reading so much about the rear main I figured that was the problem. At 28,000 miles it was back and went to the dealer to complain again, telling them it must be the rear main seal. After they had it an hour they replaced another glow plug o-ring on the pasenger side ( different one this time) and been trouble free for 40,000 miles now! Take it in and just find out what they think is wrong with it. If you don't like what you hear go somewhere else for a second opion! Chances are it just an o-ring!
Last night when I was under the truck installing the sender for the tranny temp gauge I noticed there was a drip of oil ready to drop off the bell housing.
It looked like oil, but when I touched it, it seemed more watery then oily.
I did just have a 6000 mile oil change about 2 weeks ago. So I'm going to watch it. It has NOT dripped on the floor of my garage yet. Not one drip. So I'm kinda wondering if its just the left-over oil-drip from a sloppy oil change at the dealer???
Just did my second oil change myself. Installed the Fumoto valve...once that was done, it became very easy to change the rest of the oil. The filter is just too easy. Every vehicle should have the same set up.
Anyhow, at 5,388 miles, got a little leak from some place hanging on the bell housing...like a RMS. But, it has never leaked on the driveway or used oil. So, like AG-Ford, I will not worry about it until either A) the end of the warranty, or B) something else much more major occurs, then they can do it. I too hate the thought of the whole front of my truck coming off to do the job. That's a lot of wires and hoses to put back properly.

Most of these leaks are from the cam sensor up front. When installed at the factory they were accidently cut. When it leaks it will drip down the front and look like a front main leak. Also from driving the oil works it way toward the rear of the engine and ends up on the bell housing. This is simple fix and I can't believe how many techs haven't figured this out. I bet most of the rear mains that have been replaced multiple times were never the problem. Sure would have saved Ford alot of $ if this were diagnosed right.
Where is the cam sensor? Is that visible without removing parts?
and one other question... If the tech at the stealership was sloppy doing my last oil change would the oil potentially drip-dry to the bell housing? Or is that no really feasible?

Just had the rear main seal and the cam sensor O-ring replaced last week. I have 18000 miles on my 05. The techs put dye in my oil to find the leaks. When they replaced the seal and o-ring they said that the bed plate is also seeping oil. Not sure if I want my truck taken apart yet. I'll wait and see if it gets much worse before getting it replaced.
The cam sensor is on the upper front of the engine. The bed plate leak would be an easy fix if not for Ford. They tell Ford techs to not use any kind of silicone to seal the bed plate. There just afraid of excess silicone being pinched out into the motor. If done properly this is the best way to fix this problem. Not cheap for the customer or Ford to keep pulling engines out to fix a leak.
