I have a '99 F350 4x4 7.3 PSD with a 6 SPD tranny and my owners manual says to use only Mercon ATF. I was wondering if Dextron III is compatable or if I have to go with the Mercon?
I suggest a synthetic Mercon.....Quiet and smooth.
I use Conklin synthetics in all my vehicles. I started using them over 10 years ago in my logging trucks and highway trucks, Peterbilt and Kenworth with 3406 Cat motors. I gained 1/2 mile per gallon average fuel mileage- 700 gallons per year savings- and dropped the tranny and rearend temps between 65-85 degrees. I also use Conklin oils in my personal vehicles and have had excellent service with them. The ATF I have is Dextron III and would like to use it in my 'new to me' Super Duty and need to know if that will replace the Mercon?
i just replace mine about a month ago with royal purple synthetic atf....didnt work so hot....
found out later they make a special atf called "ROYAL PURPLE SYNCHROMAX" specially designed for manual trannies that require atf...
i put that in yesterday.....works 10x smoother now..even though mines a zf5 they still call for the same fluid.....it was about 30 buck for 4 qts.. i am sure the zf6 holds more seeing how you got a cooler...

While I doubt it would hurt anything, I don't believe anything other than Mercon is approved by Ford....not even Mercon V
I just went to ZF 6Spd web site for technical specs and it says to use dextron III, Mecon , or full synthetic so I can use the oil I have. Thanks for the reponses. This site has helped me in a lot of ways with all the good tech advice from the people here. Thanks again. Eric
