Gauges not working.

Gauges not working.
The amp gauge and temperature gauges on my truck are not working and haven't been since I purchased it. The fuel and oil gauges work fine however. I pulled the instrument panel out to check the connections but there are none as it has a circuit board. Everything is clean and the main plug is making a good connection. Where do I locate the temperature sending unit and also, how do I find the amp gauge sending unit. Thanks in advance for your help. Truck is a '72 F-250 Camper special, 390ci C6 auto.

Gauges not working.
The factory ammeter on these older Ford trucks is a very poor design. Even when they work the deflection of the needle is so small you can barely tell if it has moved.
The water temp guage can be checked by grounding the wire off the sensor. The guage will go full scale if it is good. If the guage doesnt move it is dead, or has no power to it, or the sensor wire is broken.
The sensor should be one wire, red with a white stripe, and I seem to remeber that on the FE it is at the front of the engine close to the thermostat housing.
That said I sold my good ole 73 FE equipped truck , and the 76 FE is in storage so I can't go and check.
I am sure someone will jump in and help with the location now

The amp gauge is pretty finicky. On the flexible circuit board there are traces that go to pads that connect to the posts of the amp meter. The posts have nuts that run down onto these pads. What you want to do is carefully loosen and tighten these nuts to make a better connection to the pads on the circuit board. Be very careful when tightening, too much and you’ll tear the pads or break the traces. I have had success “fixing” quite a few by just doing this. There is just enough resistance from the oxidized connections to stop the gauge from working. This also works on the older trucks (pre 69) that have push-on connectors to the amp meter posts. Just pull off and push back on the connectors a couple of times. BTW when the gauge actually works there is only a small amount of deflection, just a little more than a needle’s width when the engine kicks over and the battery starts recharging.
