Talking Heat doesn't work

Hey Folks! This is my first post here. I'm wondering how to access the heater core in a 1996 explorer 4.0. I think it's behind the glove box area.

Thanks! Driving with the windows down to prevent fog is kicking my butt!

You sure it's the heater core? Have you had the thermostat checked or replaced lately? I'd start with the thermostat first.

Talking

Not yet- I'm gonna check the thermostat tomorrow morning and all the fluids and tubes and stuff. It's probably the thermo, but I just want to be ready in case it isn't- I want to get it all taken care of tomorrow no matter what- no more freezing for me

Are the hoses to the heater core getting hot?

Is the temp gauge running where it normally does?

If the windows are fogging and you're getting that wonderful, sweet, disgusting smell inside the cab it's most likely the heatercore. I'd help you out with the access question but my manual only covers 97 and up. Good luck.

The temp gauge is fine.. There is no smell at all- the windshield fogs up because it's cold out. The hoses going into the firewall to the heater core are hot, it just blows at the ambient temperature. In fact when it's hot outside I don't think it blows cold either.

I'm starting to think that some shutter behind the dash is stuck closed. Any other ideas?

Could be the blend door then. Check this out.

Not sure, but I think the 97's were the first year that had the broken blend door problem

But regardless of that you need to figure out why the blend door isnt moving.

Could be a bad dash switch or a bad blend door actuator motor.

87, is the actuator motor a hard part to find?

Not sure exactly where under the dash the motor is, but if it's the same as a 97 It will have a 5 wire connector plugged into it.

BTW, take a quick look at the fuse list in your owners manual and see which fuse is wired to the blend door actuator & check that fuse.

Odds are that fuse is wired to other accesories also, are they working?
