I had a problem with the thermostat switch for my electric fans not work one time while I was waiting for the motor to warm up. I hit 250 on the temp gauge by the time I got back out to the truck and had steam coming out the radiator but the edelbrocks checked out fine at the machine shop. I am not saying this will always be the case though. Just make sure you keep a close eye on the temp guage. I would recommend an aftermarket temp gauge. I went with edelbrocks cause my heads needed almost 700 in parts and machine work and then the stupid shop lost them. That was the point at which I went ahead and splurdged for the edelbrocks. I have since found a much better shop almost 75 miles away to do all my machine work.
In the 390 build for my '74 highboy, I used stock C8AE-H heads with CJ-sized exhaust valves (1.650" vs. 1.560") and the stock intake valves I left alone.
Reason? Better low-end torque. Also, the intake ports were NOT opened up, nor were they polished, to keep the low-speed charge better mixed for better low-end torque. Ported out the exhaust side, especially because of the bigger exhaust valve.
Overall, with a multi-spark MSD 6AL, it did pretty well. Pay attention to others' opinions here, there are more experienced people here than I
