Hey everybody.I was wondering did ford ever produce a radiator overflow jug.On my trucks I just tied a antifreeze jug near the fan shroud and put the hose in it.Anybody in hear have any opinions on a need for a jug or not. Thanks
You could always use an overflow jug off an early 80s ford f150.It is a single tank with a divider in the middle to divide antifreeze on one side and windshield washer fluid on the other.I think thats what i will do on my 78 .
What an overflow/recovery jug does is catch the antifreeze that is expelled from the radiator. When the pressure inside exceeds the pressure rating on the radiator cap from heat like an extra hot day or towing. When the engine cools down and the pressure returns to normal it recovers the coolant back into the coolant system. Thats what i have been told.I could be right or wrong
I installed an AutoZone universal kit on my 78 Bronco last year. It fits perfectly on the driver's side of the radiator support, with a short run of overflow tubing. You'll have to change out the radiator cap for one that seals on both lips of the radiator, in order for the overflow to suction back into the radiator.
Coolant recovery bottles are not as necessary on downflow radiators as much as on crossflow, but I still like the idea of having one. They prevent coolant from burping out when you stop, and allow you to fill the radiator completely rather than leaving an air space in the radiator top. More coolant equals slightly better cooling ability.....
i used 2 3inch pvc caps and a 12in long 3 in pvc pipe and drilled hole in top and stuck overflow hose into it and mounted it behind grill, dont laugh, it works!
Some of the earlier trucks like my 76 didn't have an overflow tank. But they were designed to not have the radiator filled all the way up. The air gap on top of the tank took care of the expansion of the coolant. There was even a sticker on the rad support telling you to only fill the rad to the top of the core.
