I do not know for sure but I think the Valvoline syn is really a highly processed dino that qualifies as syn under a loop hole that was created a few years back. These oils are still quite excellent and are very near syn in capabilities, that's why I think the loop hole is applied. Essentially a cheaper dino based oil with syn like capabilities.
I think Mobil 1 is still a "real" syn, ie PAO and or esther blend syn.
I use both. I use the Valvoline syn in my 94 F250 with 460 which is my tow vehicle for an 8,000# trailer. So far over 50,000 miles with no complaints.
I have used Mobil 1 in every personal car since 1980 and ditto no complaints.
But I have never had a problem with any oil I used since 1) I change regularly and use oil to spec. 2) I have never driven a car to total wear out and torn it down so have no real comparisons. 3) It is my opinion that most oil related failures are thru lack of maintenance or abuse/incorrect spec oil used.
Back 20 years ago, the type of oil was far more critical since none of the oils were anywhere near as excellent as just about any oil made today that meets your engine spec.
Really, if you use a good oil meeting API and SAE spec for your engine and change regularly, you will be fine. This is true whether it be dino, syn, blend or wannabe syn. If you go extended drain intervals or see temperature extremes such as in towing, then a "real" syn or wannabe syn may be for you. I use syn because it is my religion and I believe marketing hype.
Good Luck,

Dont do any towing with it so far, think I'll stick with the valvoline even though it isnt "true" synthetic because the price is good. I just checked out the price of mc full synthetic 5w20, can you believe $13 a litre(yikes) canadian, thats friggin expensive even in american coin. Anyways, thanx for all the input guys.
