If you're re-gearing and have the diff open get an Auburn LS in it. I had one in my '99 and it is so much better than the stock LS setup that's in my '03. Ford likes the Auburn limited slip too, it comes in the police package on the Crown Vics.

I would use anything other than a clutch LS. I have a detroit and love it for plowing and towing but many go with a gear LS. The detroit is so quiet I forget its back there. Plowing in 2wd is nice.
On edit: I carry 6k of sand in the back.

Here's a couple of threads for you to check, as this comes up quite a bit.

Those should help you out a little.

4.30 sounds good to me for that tire size.. 4.10's would work so 4.30 will be that much better.

For that tire size, 4.30's. 4.56's will be too deep.

I haven't put my stock tires back on with these gears, but I'm dying to have a need to move something HEAVY to throw them back on.

About 5 days ago I called a shop on an LS unit price, right now he recomended Auburn LS unit he say it has a 4 yr waurantee, if anything goes wrong with it, they will replace it,,,, but wont pay for any labor, it was like $ 700.00 installed, he said it was a good unit .

I wouldn't go above the 4.30 rear end and I would use the Detroit locker...
