Has anybody on here recently tore apart a Front Dana 44 TTB to replace the gasket or seal in it? i was planning on doing it this weekend, and was wondering how complicated and involved it would be. its leaking some gear oil out, and it is allways low when i check it, so i figure this is the case. im not worried about really screwing up alingment or such, its just a beater truck anyways. ITs in a 1980 f250 4x4, and any help is appreciated.
You'll need to drop the center chunk out of the front end, it's awkward and heavy. An extra set of hands will make the job easier. You will need to remove the axle shafts before removing the diff housing. remove the 10 bolts in the front, 2 on the backside and out she comes! I don't believe anyone offers a replacement gasket for the diff housing, so you may have to use silicone sealant. BTW it's also a good time to replace the output shaft and pinion seals while you have it apart, they're pretty cheap; ya might as well do it.
Tear the hub assembly off on both sides then pull the aselshaft on the driverside out and for the passenger side pull the 4 bolts out on the side of the diff then pull that axel out.Once the axels are out pull all the bolts in the front out and pry the diff out from the back.Dont forget the driveline.
how much do yall think it would cost to get this fixed? i would do it, but a extra set of hands is rare here and i cant really lift heavy crap with my now frucked up wrist. i wish they just made it like a rear dana axle, it wold be so much easier and simpler.
