Has anyone here recently tore apart a front Dana 44 TTB? im looking to see how complicated it will be to do this to replace the gasket and change the gear oil in there. i assume its a lot harder than a rear Dana 60, but how much so?
Its on a 1980 F250 4x4, just to let ya know, with pics in the gallery.
thats pretty cool to hear that from someone. its acctually made in november of 1979, but is a 1980 model. 351M, T18, NP208, full leaf springs, have your shock mounts rusted out yet? i round one of my shocks right after i bought it hanging loose from just the bottom mount and rubing against my gas tank! not sure how long it had been like that, but it was one of the first repairs i did, and i replaced all the shocks while i was at it.
How many hours do you think i am looking at to get to where i can replace the gasket? if its a REALLY long and torturous job than i might take it to MR. Transmission, i know the guys that work there pretty well, and one of em is my bowling coach, so i oughta get a decent price for it.
Now i feel like a complete NoOb because i dont have any idea what those tools are. i guess i should just stick to building houses and not work on cars anymore. are there any common hand tools that could replace those, or should i scrounge up deposit money for the CrapZone tool rental?
You will need the hub nut socket for auto hubs or the four prong socket for manuals. You can get by without a spindle puller. I used a gear puller along with the two nuts on the spindle shaft. Also, my 95F150 had no gasket on my diff. Ford just used a sealer on front and rear diffs.
Thats cool, my 80 F250 4x4 was made in Nov 79 too. It is a reg cab long box and has a 400 automatic. 2 things made this job tough. 1, the spindles were really seized on and I had to try everything to get them off. (This took the longest.) 2, The pumpkin was heavy and awkward to remove and install while laying on a gravel driveway.
