greywolf, one of the best experiences ive ever had was in my back woods in late december a few years back turkey hunting with my bow hours before a major snow storm hit us,the air was so crisp and all the noises in the forest seemed to mute. and A_G ive seen it lighting many times during a bad nor'easter round these parts, ive always wondered bout a tornado tho..
(Also since it has not snowed yet this year where I am)
1) What do snow clouds look like?
2) What does snow (when it is about to fall) smell like?
They say you can tell when there is about to be a snowfall. It seems almost hushed, quieter than usual. How would you describe it?
Living in Western Massachusetts I can vouch for what snow looks like. The clouds always have a dull grey COLD appearance. The air in a snow storm does have a crisp clean smell to it. And, yes there is a stillness to the air before the storm approaches. It is a quiet calm before the first flakes fall.
If any of you want snow just send me a self addressed envelope and I will be glad to share some of the feet of snow. Where I live there is 10" on the ground and a short trip up to the Bershires they got 20" on Tuesday.
I love spring, summer, and fall. I really dislike winter. Everything looks dead and dirty. A 30 degree day is a great day. Mostly it is 10's and 20's for highs and -10 to +10 for lows. This winter it seems to snow 3-4 times a week.
The toughest thing about winter in New England is how long it lasts. From about Thankgiving until the 2nd week of April. Some of the snow banks in parking lots stick around into MAY!
What is a nice crisp morning: A early fog at 15 degrees and after the fog is gone see all the trees in the woods all covered with white ice crystals.
Some places in upper Michigan dig tunnels to get their cars into the garage.

Snow clouds are typically very dense, gray, and low lying. The smell of snow is hard to accurately describe. To me, it's so clean and fresh it doesn't smell like anything. It's like trying to describe the smell of the ocean. You have to experience it to understand it.
If you have a "nice" snow (where the wind isn't howling) then it is quiet and very peaceful while the snow is falling. The freshly fallen snow and the falling snow absorbs a lot of sound.
I've never seen thunder and lightning with snow. I think it is rather rare because thunderstorms are very unstable air masses where you have cold areas and hot areas colliding, hence thunder and lightning. Typically snowstorms are more stable.
Those are good questions. I haven't seen enough snow this season to give a good answer.
In fact we are planning on 73 degrees farenheit with clear skies and sunshine tomorrow. I think I'll get my blue jean shorts and t-shirt out and might go do some fishin. I'll keep an eye out for them snow clouds, tomorrow, for you.
Theres alot of different variations in snowfalls.
theres the kind that start as rain, change to snow , and back to rain.
... The kind that is dry and cold, leaving a powdery accumulation.
THe kind thats more like a heavy frost settling out of the air on a sunny, but very cold morning.
Theres snow that falls wet and heavy, some thats light, but still packs , and some that just blows away.
I've seen lighting during snow storms, but it was a really wet snow.
I've also seen "snow devils" not during an actual snow storm, but on a windy day 8 or 10 miles off shore in lake Huron.
The Inuit have something like 3 dozen different words to describe the quality of snow and snowfalls.
yes it does lightning when it snows we had some recently it's called thunder snow and it usually snows to beat the band, it is never actually too cold to snow, however it most likely is that the air is too dry, and therefore warms up a bit as the temp and the dewpoint merge then snow falls.
snow falls from the same type of clouds that rain falls from aint no special cloud.
