I'm having a problem with my explorer. It seems as though when I start the truck up, it idles weird until the temp goes up. The RPM will flutter, from 500 to about 800, with barely a second in between each pulse. The entire truck will shudder until I begin driving, then after a few miles (or it warms up to about 1/3 of where the heat gauge is supposed to be), everything is fine. Horsepower lagging as well, it just doesn't seem to have the same power as before. Suggestions?
I already cleaned the carbon out of my IAC valve, checked it recently, and it's pretty clean still. I'm thinking air filter or something to do with the air intake.
Does it only do it when it is cold? If so it could be the intake manifold o-rings. Do a search on the o-ring and see if this is your problem. Hopes this helps.

Look into replacing your pcv valve. Mine did the same thing and i put a new one on and the idle smoothed out.bulldog3531 has a good thought of the o-ring idea too so look at both and see if it would help
Sounds like classic intake manifold o-ring problem. I had mine done over the summer and what a difference between this winter and last. The other symptoms of this are that the problem gets worse the colder it is and that it goes away when the engine starts to get warm. One thing you can get your mechanic to do is to spray your intake area with carb cleaner when it's cold to see if the problem stops for a minute then picks up again. Good luck.
WOW, your answer was quick! What a great bunch of guys...now, I'm pulling a woman thing and asking more questions...
What should the ride height be for a 2000 Ford Explorer XLT 2 WD?
What should fuel pump pressure be for a 2000 Ford Explorer XLT 2 WD?
Where is the fuel injection pump pressure regulator on a 2000 Ford Explorer XLT 2 WD?
What does the fuel injection pressure damper do on 2000 Ford Exploer XLT 2 WD?
Hi, I should have mentioned that the idle rpms is when the truck is in drive with the brakes one. As for your other questions I am sorry but I can't help you there. Maybe a service manual (haynes) would be of help. Maybe someone else would be able to help you out. Good luck.
