water pump change

I am trying to change the water pump on my 1999 super duty diesel. Behind the fans I have removed the 4 bolts holding the fan assembly drive pully on, now how do I get the fan assembly loose from the water pump?

It's just threaded onto the shaft. You remove it in the direction that it rotates. Hold the pulley and get a big wrench on the hex part of the shoulder and turn the hex.

It would seem to me that if it was designed to be held that some type of hold would be provided for the pully.

You might try a strap wrench.

There is a special spanner tool that grabs the bolts. Or like the previous post said, a strap wrench around the pulley works ok as long as you don't bend the pulley.

Here's a link to what you need. It's not the direct application, diesel is not listed. But it gives you a general idea of what you need to look for.

The fan nut should be a 1 7/8 nut. What I did is removed a couple bolts holding the pully on. I took a piece a steel bar stock, about a 1/4 in thick, 1" wide and about 30 " long and drilled a hole in it about 3" from the end. I then used the bolt from the waterpump pulley and screwed the bar stock on the pulley. It ends up working like a spanner wrench,as you rotate the fan nut the bar stock will jam up and hold the pulley and allow the nut to break free. I did not marr anything up doing it this way. I also had to use a dead blow hammer striking the wrench to get it to break free. 1 very important thing, Don't use the Ford torque for the waterpump mounting bolts! You will snap them off. The correct torque is 18 lbs.-ft. Found out the hard way. Hope this helps and good luck.

Good idea Nodakford, that is something I can make here but first I am going to try a chain strap wrench to hold the pully

A little off topic, but you might consider making sure you change out the sheet metal jacket on the pump if you're not already. I think getting the old one to mate & seal with the new pump can be a problem.

At least that's what I've been told.
