I heard the 4x4 is different from the 2WDR
That is correct. The lift struts on the 2wd are longer than those on the 4wd. Ford had to put shorter ones on the 4wd so that you could lift the gate in the garage.... because of the extra vehicle height of the 4wd.

I put the 2wd ones on my '01 4x4. Only place I could find them other than a dealer was here:

http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/cata...&parttype=1404
And they're a site supporter too.

Mine started to fail 4 or 5 months ago. Went dead last month. 62K mi.

Does Anyone Know What The Length Of The 4x4 Tailgate Struts Are, I'm Just To Lazy To Measure Them Now. The Site Above Said The 2wd Are 15"... I Also Would Like To Get The Longer Ones As I Find Myself Hitting My Head On The Tailgate.

I found both the 2WD and 4WD models listed at fordpartsonline. Here is the link for a 2000 Excursion. http://www.parts.com/partlocator/ind...00&catalogid=1.

They call it a lift cylinder but do not list the different lengths. Rockauto's price is lower on the 2WD model but, as stated by someone else, they don't list a 4WD model. I might try and replace mine with the 2WD model as I do not have garage issues and it always seems like I am ducking my head. In fact, I don't have a garage.

My Ex has 153,000 on it and the lift cylinders just started not working on cold mornings. Once it warms up, they seem to work fine. I figure, though, that it is only a matter of time before they fail altogether.

I read on another string here the 4wd ones are 1" shorter, which gives the gate 2" less clearance.

Hey Fords4Me,

Is there a trick to replacing these left cylinders? I just received mine from Fordpartsonline, and it appears they snap on to a ball joint of some kind. Is there something I need to do when i remove the old ones? Or just pry off the little clamps on each end. Also, and at the risk of sounding ignorant which I am regarding this subject, do I need to do something to activate the hydraulic action? I can't budge these things. In other words, would you guide me as to the installation process for these lifts? Thanks in advance.

Never mind my last post. I found a thread that dealt with a replacement of an Aerostar liftgate and it answered my question and gave me a tip as to how to keep the hatch open while replacing the struts. This was the easiest replacement I have done yet. Just a couple of long 2x4s to prop open the liftgate, a flat head screwdriver and voila. Done in just a couple of minutes. I did not realize how much difference a couple of inches makes. That's what she said.

She was right too. Glad it all worked out for you. The little bit of extra clearance is nice. And the gate is a little heavy.
