'91 Explorer Overhaul?

Greetings from the '48 -'60 forum. Now that my "59 panel truck is reliable it's time to re-fit our '91 Explorer with 239K miles on it. My wife & I really like it - my daily driver, her "horsey" weekend vehicle. The only major repair it's had was replacing the tranny about 100K ago. Would like to tap into this brain trust for ideas for major work to accomplish before any catastrophic failures occur. Paint and an engine overhaul are obvious, but are there any mileage/performance mods - headers/intake manifold/cams you all recommend to do while the engine is out? Suspension/ Electronics/AC etc......Thanks.

Try here for a general list. I think you'll know what you need to do based on what symptoms you have. http://draco.acs.uci.edu/explorer/

Engine controls is another issue. http://www.fordfuelinjection.com/

No symptoms other than a driver's side front-end clunk when braking at low speeds. Runs so well it scares me. I just want to avoid the rush prior to the inevitable failure.

Great link!

Are there any performance modifications I should make while the engine is out? intake manifold, headers, muffler, cams etc. Likewise with the suspension - upgrade springs/shocks? It's a '91 4x4 with a 4.0 V6 & factory towing packeage, used as daily driver, light towing, some all-weather dirt road driving. Any increase in power or mpg welcome.

Competition cams has a couple of cams to chose from. Check thier web site. If you mod to this degree, you will likely need a custom programable chip for the EEC-iv computer. Since you're giving more air with the cam, you'll need more fuel. Only way to correctly do this is with a custom chip programed on a dyno.

I have a set of Borla headers. Other manufacturers out there too.

Suspension - check 4wheel parts. They should have from 2" to 8" lifts available.
