My 92 explorer's tranny petered out on me . while jacking it up for removal I noticed the rear end was cracked, just my luck. Since I live near New Orleans there are a lot of flood cars for sale. What would need to look for to get my old baby back on the road. will newer models work? Mine is 1992 ford explorer 4 door 4x4 standard trans.

Hey Bob i would look for a good bargain on the 92 to 95 for the start of the tranny and the rear end. If you get the parts dont forget to drain the fluid on the trans and rear end as water may have seeped inside during that nasty flood out there. Good luck
91-94 should interchange. Stay away from the 95 as it was a transition year. Regarding the flood damage.... many of those vehicles sat for days and weeks under water and mud. If you get a rear or trans under those circumstances, you may have to do a rebuild on it. Good luck..
Bob - when you say "standard" do you mean the 5 sp M5ODR1 mazda trans? If so, what do you mean the rear is cracked? There is an extension housing on these trannys that are a bolt on. If the housing is cracked, you can do a web search and maybe find it for less than $50.
If you mean the rear diff is cracked, that's a differenrt story. These are standard 8.8 rear ends. Any 90-94 Explorer or Ranger should work. Even Aerostar vans used these but mat have a different axel width. Regardless, these are available in wrecking yards all across the US. Happy hunting!
The extension housing is where the transfer case mounts. It's a special adapter for the t-case. 4x4's have it, 4x2's don't. Since you have a 4x4, you can replace this extension. Do a web search through the wrecking yards or check e-bay. It bolts on for sure and it has a rear shaft seal in it.
