i put a used autometer tach in my 77 highboy. tach seems to work well, but when i turn the lights on, the tach goes dead. if i turn the dimmer **** down the tach comes up as the lights dim. is this most likely a problem w/ the tach or the trucks wiring. the illumination for the tach doesn't come on, is something probably shorting in the tach, or could this be a bad ground?
Sounds like your tach is fighting the dash lights for a good ground. like when you see someones flashers on and the taillights wig-wag back and forth,or when they put a signal on one brake light goes out. Try running a separate groud for the tach to the firewall. If not might need to wire tach lighting to its own power supply as your light circuit can't handle extra draw.Ford lightb switch dimmers (the spring resister on the ceramic part of the lightb switch tend to get coroded with age.Just my thoughts Eedvark
Sounds like your ground wire from your tach and the illumination wires are reversed. You are using the illumination wire as a ground and the tach is running through the dash lamps for a ground. Swap them and see what happens.
thanks for the replies. i thought i had it wired correctly, but i'll double check that and check my ground. is there any other place to get power w/ the lights, or should i just have keyed power for illumination?
Any blue/red wire from under the dash should work for the illumination. If you have a battery charger, you could hook the tach up and make sure you got the wires correct.
