Transmission question?

My 99 4.2L F-150 drives fine under normal conditions. I occationaly tow my boat with it and it has done fine up until reciently. The last couple of times I towed the boat it towed ok but when I try to pull it up the ramp it has really struggled. It is kind of like the engine is reving the tires are gripping but the transmission is slipping. Anybody have any ideas? Does it sound like something needs adjusting or a major transmission problem?

Have you changed the fluid/filter and cleaned the pan?

Is it a manual or auto?
If it's an auto, flush it, and get a new filter. Maybe spend a couple bucks on a tranny cooler, they really extending the life of a transmission when towing.

Manual? Sounds bad. Clutch problem maybe?

pull the pan, clean everything, change the filter, reinstall pan and add 5 quarts of new MERCON. i personally do not believe in the flush. you can look under the torque converter and rotate it slowly and look for a small plug about 5/16 diameter. if you have one, you can remove and get 8 more quarts of old out out of the converter. if no plug, dont worry right now.
