My Ex with V10 recently sat in the garage over Christmas break for about 7 days without starting. Yesterday when I fired it up for the first time, it let out a pretty good puff of white/grey smoke. Has anyone else experienced this? Is it a normal situation with this motor?
I've only had the Ex for 3 months and think it happened once before but I didn't pay much attention to it.
Any help or suggestions? It has less than 1000 miles on the oil (i think according to the sticker from the dealership).
How many miles on it? If it's gray smoke it could be oil leaking down around the valve guides. What does the smoke smell like? Oil smell or sweet smell? Right now because it only happens after prolonged shutdown keep an eye on the coolant level. Make sure the engine is cold so the level isn't changing due to thermal expansion.
Mine does it and while still under warranty had the dealer look at it for several days and of course it would'nt do it for them. They said it was from a lack of oil changes causing possible premature drying of the valve seals. I only drive the vehicle in the summer and put on about 5,000 mi in that time and change it twice in that ammount of time so I discounted the lack of oil changes as a problem. I did switch to a synthetic oil and refilled with only 6qts instead of the 6 1/2 that brings it to the full mark on the dipstick and for whatever reason it seems to have cured the problem.
i have an 03 V10, and i get smoke on startup when..
i started the cold engine, ran it for a minute, then shut it down. Then the next time i start it, there is puff of smoke.
The scenerio is as follows. I get up in the morning, move my truck out of the driveway into the road. Shut it down and go in the house. Within the next hour i head out to work and when i start the motor, there is a puff of smoke.
As i mentioned, it only happens when the previous time the engine ran, was only for a minute (and cold).

Its been going on for a long time they just don't liked to be shut off and restated or set for a long time, both of my V10s do it. My work truck is the worst of the two and its got 93K hard miles and still running strong.

I have an 02 V10, and I get the same puff of smoke if I start it and shut it off after only a minute. The next time I start it there is a puff of smoke.
Thanks for all the replies. Now that you guys mention it...it DOES seem to happen when I move it in the garage (this thing doesn't leave any room in front so...) or only run it for a few minutes and then shut it off...do what I need...start it again to move it back up...and then it usually sits for a while till the next start...then puff...
This is my main tow vehicle for our 7500 pound camper and didn't want to get stranded somewhere...
